Into the Woods / PHAMALY Theatre Company
Jul 12 all-day

We think we know how the fairy tales go: Little Red Riding Hood. Cinderella. Rapunzel. Jack and the Beanstalk. Think again. As a childless baker and his wife try to start a family, they discover a host of fairy tale characters seeking the fulfillment of their own wishes and dreams. Princes and princesses trying to find love; a witch trying to reclaim youth and beauty; and families trying to put food on the table. As they venture deeper into the woods, they discover the realities of life, as well as its consequences. Winner of 5 Tony Awards, this Sondheim classic reminds us that life is an unpredictable journey – “to mind, to heed, to find, to think, to teach, to join” – and that no one is alone.

Hair / Fearless Theatre
Jul 20 all-day

A rock musical, Hair is the product of the hippie counterculture and sexual revolution of the late 1960s. Several of its songs became anthems of the anti-Vietnam War peace movement. The musical’s profanity, its depiction of the use of illegal drugs, its treatment of sexuality, and its nude scene caused a lot of controversy at the time. The musical broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of “rock musical”, using a racially integrated cast, and inviting the audience onstage for the finale.

Something wicked this way comes… Shakespeare’s vivid tragedy Macbeth probes the depths of pure evil, blind ambition, and raw power. The play is dominated by its title character and his single-minded pursuit of the Scottish throne. Cry-Baby: The Musical / Equinox Theatre Company
Jul 27 all-day

It’s 1954. Everyone likes Ike, nobody likes communism and Wade “Cry-Baby” Walker is the coolest boy in Baltimore. He’s a bad boy with a good cause truth, justice and the pursuit of rock and roll. Cry-Baby and the square rich girl, Allison, are star-crossed lovers at the center of this world. Fueled by hormones and the new rhythms of rock and roll, she turns her back on her squeaky clean boyfriend, Baldwin, to become a “drape” (a Baltimore juvenile delinquent) and Cry-Baby’s moll. At the other end of the topsy-turvy moral meritocracy of 1954 America, Baldwin is the king of the squares and leads his close-harmony pals against the juvenile delinquents, who are ultimately arrested for arson, sending the drapes all off to prison.

Miss Holmes / Creede Repertory Theatre
Jul 27 all-day

An anonymous note, a fearful wife, and a pair of curious shoes? Sounds like a perfect case Holmes and Watson. Ah but there’s a twist: Miss Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Dorothy Watson sleuth their way through the twists and turns of this classic mystery. The Chicago Tribune calls it “a cunning and highly enjoyable gender-bent take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s maddeningly brilliant detective.” If you fancied Around the World in 80 Days, you’ll love the lightning-quick pace and skillful character swaps of Miss Holmes. The game’s afoot!

War of the Worlds: The Panic Broadcast / Lost & Found Productions
Jul 27 all-day

An alien invasion throws humanity into chaos in the classic sci-fi novel The War of the Worlds–but all it took to cause real-life panic in the streets was Orson Welles’s 1938 radio adaptation, which listeners took for news. Now, ten years later, the WBFR radio ensemble recreates the colorful events surrounding the infamous evening, including the full original broadcast. Complete with vintage commercials and live sound effects, this radio-play-within-a-radio-play is a thrilling homage to the form’s golden age and timely reminder of what fear can do to a society.
