The Boys Next Door / Funky Little Theater Co. in Colorado Springs
Oct 5 all-day

The place is a communal residence in a New England city, where four mentally handicapped men live under the supervision of an earnest, but increasingly “burned out”, young social worker named Jack. Norman, who works in a doughnut shop and is unable to resist the lure of the sweet pastries, takes great pride in the huge bundle of keys that dangles from his waist; Lucien P. Smith has the mind of a five-year-old but imagines that he is able to read and comprehend the weighty books he lugs about; Arnold, the ringleader of the group, is a hyperactive, compulsive chatterer, who suffers from deep-seated insecurities and a persecution complex; while Barry, a brilliant schizophrenic who is devastated by the unfeeling rejection of his brutal father, fantasizes that he is a golf pro. Mingled with scenes from the daily lives of these four, where “little things” sometimes become momentous (and often very funny), are moments of great poignancy when, with touching effectiveness, we are reminded that the handicapped, like the rest of us, want only to love and laugh and find some meaning and purpose in the brief time that they, like their more fortunate brothers, are allotted on this earth.

“We have entered as strangers…soon we have friends.” The affable Elwood P. Dowd has developed a life of contentment that he shares with his best friend: a 6-foot-tall pooka rabbit. But his eccentric ways are increasingly threatening to his sister’s social aspirations, and she resolves to have him committed to a sanitarium…until plans go awry and she ends up being committed instead. Winner of the 1945 Pulitzer Prize, this classic comedy challenges our assumptions of what – and who – is “normal,” and whether that’s something we want to be anyhow. Commedia d’Amore / VisionBox 360
Oct 19 all-day

Commedia is not a comedy in the English speaking sense but a commedia in the european sense of a theatrical story or event, one of whose genres is commedia d’el arte. This is a commedia d’amore or commedia “of love.” Set in 1830s Italy in the home of the well established Presutti Family, the story depicts a crushingly patriarchal society where women struggle to carve out space as individuals. The play examines love in all its forms from child-like innocence to lust, to romantic longing and finally love of self.

The Dining Room / The Evergreen Players
Oct 19 all-day

The play, The Dining Room, is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The actions of the play are a mosaic of interrelated scenes. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.

When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder? / Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mtn College in Glenwood Springs
Oct 19 all-day

When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder? — The setting is Foster’s Diner, a New Mexico rest stop that lost most of its clientele when a new highway bypass opened. Employees include restless cook Stephen (nicknamed “Red Ryder”), mousy waitress Angel, and their no-nonsense boss Clark. Lyle, owner of the adjacent filling station, stops in on occasion to break the monotony with his cheery banter. The boring routine of the daily grind is disrupted with the arrival of two couples, the upscale Richard and Clarisse, and the younger and wilder Teddy, an unbalanced Vietnam War vet, and Cheryl, his hippie girlfriend. Complications arise when illegal drugs and guns enter the picture, and Teddy resorts to physical, mental, and emotional torture when he holds everyone hostage.
