Anna in the Tropics is a poignant and poetic play set in 1929 Florida in a Cuban-American cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand, and “lectors” are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics, and the American dream prove a volatile combination.

Feb 9 all-day

We begin inside a modern-day museum, where two security guards and a painter find themselves compelled to touch a masterpiece. But soon, we are skipping through time, watching Rembrandt at work and listening to Homer discuss the nature of art. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette hailed The Rembrandt as “funny, sweet, melancholy, and emotionally engaging… imaginative and strangely comforting.” Fresh from the stages of Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago and winner of the 2015 Stavis Award, Jessica Dickey’s delightful play asks us to consider the longevity of art and the brevity of life.

The Nerd / Sopris Theatre Company at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs
Feb 15 all-day

In The Nerd, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his birthday party. But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. The normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence—a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising “twist” ending of the play.

Colorado New Play Summit / Denver Center Theatre Company
Feb 16 all-day

COLORADO NEW PLAY SUMMIT – Watching a play spring to life on stage might make you believe in magic. But before a story can sweep you off into another world, it takes a whole lot of humanity to make it possible. After coaxing an idea into a script, playwrights can rely on the eyes of dramaturgs, directors and other writers to guide and edit. But nothing compares to presenting a piece to a live audience, where the real-time reactions of theatre lovers elevate words into something more.

At the Colorado New Play Summit, it’s your time to shine as you meet some of theatre’s most ambitious writers while helping them fine-tune their newest works. Listen to play readings by fabulous actors and give your feedback on where you think the story should go, and enjoy fully-produced Theatre Company world premieres of “Last Night and the Night Before” (a featured reading at the 2017 Summit) and “The Whistleblower” by Tony Award winner Itamar Moses (“The Band’s Visit”). Plus, be a part of a special concert reading of “Rattlesnake Kate,” a concept-album-turned-musical by The Lumineers’ Neyla Pekarek and playwright Karen Hartman.

The inspiration doesn’t stop with the performances. Talk with the featured playwrights, directors, actors and other creatives about their plays over tasty meals and at special events like the Summit Party. It’s your chance to meet the brightest minds in the craft and play an integral part in the future of Colorado theatre.

The Rock of Aging Revival! / Firehouse Theater Company
Feb 16 all-day

Back by popular demand “The Rolling Emotions” take the stage for The Rock of Aging Revival! A hit band in the ’60s and ’70s, Ricki D. Bones, Willie Withers, and Tina Tumor are struggling to “keep on keepin’ on.” Poor financial management and the rigors of aging have forced them to sing for their supper by taking any gigs they can, like recording jingles for commercials for seniors’ products. Now, along with their new back-up singers, the band has a chance for a big comeback, as part of the AARP National “Feeling Groovy” Tour. The group finds new life as they give the songs of their youth fresh meaning—singing about the maladies of getting older, such as weight gain, memory loss, and gastric distress (think about having that first colonoscopy performed to the chorus, “Snake it Up Doctor, if you twist I’ll shout!”). Join with the band as they admit that while aging “ain’t for sissies,” it’s much easier to face with the help of their beloved rock ‘n’ roll.

Così fan tutte pairs comedy and commentary at its best, set to some of the most extraordinary music Mozart ever wrote. Loveland Opera Theatre continues the tradition of telling operatic stories in beautiful settings, bringing Così to life in an idyllic Impressionist aesthetic. Known as a sort of Rodgers & Hammerstein of their time, Mozart & Lorenzo Da Ponte collaborated on such great works as “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni” and, of course, Così fan tutte! – Full production with live orchestra.

THE MOORS
In The Moors, two sisters and a depressed Mastiff dog live out their lives on the bleak English moors. The women spend their days dreaming of love and power until the arrival of a hapless governess and a moor-hen set all three on a strange and hilarious path. With the passion of a Bronte sisters’ novel, playwright Jen Silverman puts a modern spin on this dark comedy about love and desperation paired with a sharp sense of the absurd. The play is a humorous (and subversive) story about love and the instability of gender roles. A regional premiere!
